I still find it hard to believe. It looks like all 3 of our children will be members of the military.
My daughter joined the Army Reserve right before the start of her Senior year. She loves what she does in the Reserve and has even talked about going active. She is away doing 6 weeks of training right now and really misses her fiance and baby. This is causing her to re-think about going active. Her father and I are very proud of her and the responsible adult that she has become. She has come a long way. Let's just say alot of my gray hairs are from her teenage years. Sunday was her 20th birthday and we were a little bummed that she was away and we couldn't celebrate it. She has requested homemade beef and noodles for her birthday dinner when she gets back. I told her we will see. My daughter and her fiance have decided to get married this summer so we will be busy planning a wedding when she gets back from her class.
My oldest son had decided to join the Army right before his Senior year and then half-way through the year he changed his mind. After graduated at the end of May last year he was at loose ends. He has always had an interest in engineering but didn't want to have a bunch of student loans. He decided to look into the Navy. After jumping through hoops to be able to join the Navy because of backing out of the Army he was able to enlist. He scored really well on the ASVAB test and another test which enabled him to qualify for the job he really wanted. He will be going to school for Nuclear Engineering. He will be leaving for basic training in November. He has been trying to find work to tide him over until he leaves in November but so far he hasn't had any luck.
Before I talk about our youngest let me go back and give you some info on the kids. All of our children are very smart but it comes easier to some more than others. Our daughter is very smart but she had to work very hard for the grades that she got. Our older son is very smart but liked to take the "easier" route in school. It was not until his Junior and Senior years did he really try to take harder classes.
Now we get to our youngest child. He is a Junior in high school. He is a straight "A" student who could probably get a scholarship to anywhere he wanted to go. He is the one who totally surprised us. He always said that he was not going into the military; so when he sat down and talked to me back in January he totally surprised me. He said that he was concerned because he was bored with school already and that usually didn't happen until almost the end of the school year. He also said he didn't want to go to college right away. I jokingly asked him "are you going to join the military?" He replied "might as well". I was floored! He said he wants to be a boss. He wants to go into the Navy and be a Nuclear Engineer like his brother. We have been waiting for him to get his ASVAB scores back and he finally got them back last week. They were supposed to get them back in February but we had so many snow days they put them off until this past week. He scored high enough that it looks like he will pre-qualify for the job he wants. We will know more when we talk to the recruiters next month. He turns 17 in May and the recruiters can talk to him then. The day he received his scores he went to the calender and counted down the days to his birthday.
My husband and I are very proud of all 3 of our children. We are also proud of our nephew who is in the Army. We are proud of all of those who proudly serve our country.
